BERKELEY, Calif. -- Four Oregon State players scored in double figures but California used an 18-0 run in the second half to pull away and win 73-56 at Haas Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
Malcolm Duvivier led the Beavers (17-12, 8-9 Pac-12) with 18 points and a career-high eight rebounds, while Jarmal Reid got the start for the second straight game and had 13 points.
Gary Payton II had 12 points and extended his consecutive game streak with a steal to 29 games, tying his father, Gary Payton, for the second-longest in school history.
Langston Morris-Walker, a native of Berkeley, added 10 points.
““We couldn't get baskets so we couldn't set up our D,” Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. “We started gambling in the backcourt and gave up timely putbacks and and-1's. We had defensive breakdowns.
“They just were much more aggressive, which is exactly what we said in the second half, that they were going to drive it, drive it, drive it. We gave up 62 percent in the second half. I don't know if our guys ran out of gas or what. It's been happening to this team. It is what it is.
“Maybe our guys are fatigued and gave us all they had for the game. The fuel tank goes empty in the second half. Great response early. They jumped us and we came back.”
Jordan Mathews scored 17 points, Jabari Bird had 14 and California used a big run in the second half to pull away.
Tyrone Wallace added 12 points and seven assists for the Golden Bears. California (17-12, 7-9) snapped a three-game losing streak in its final home game of the season.
The Bears trailed 44-36 with 13 minutes remaining when they put together one of their best runs of the year. Cal scored 18 consecutive points and outscored the Beavers 24-2 over a six-minute span to take the lead for good. Mathews made a pair of 3-pointers during the run then capped it with two free throws that put the Bears up 60-46.
The Beavers also used their long-distance shooting to stay close then took a 29-24 lead following Duvivier's three-point play and a 3-pointer by Tanner Sanders.
Oregon State closes out its regular season at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Gill Coliseum in the 344th Civil War, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, The Oregon 529 College Savings Network, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
