Beavers Fall Just Short In Civil War
March 05, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Sophomore guard Malcolm Duvivier scored a game-high 18 points and Oregon State battled to the final second before falling 65-62 to Oregon on Wednesday night before an energized crowd of 9,339 at Gill Coliseum.
Junior guard Gary Payton II just missed his second career triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and six steals, forward Jarmal Reid added 18 points and junior forward Olaf Schaftenaar 11 for the Beavers in their regular-season home finale.
It was the 344th Civil War, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, The Oregon 529 College Savings Network, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores
Oregon (23-8, 13-5 Pac-12) scored five quick points to break a 52-52 standoff with just over three minutes remaining to finally subdue the Beavers (17-13, 8-10), who lost for only the second time in 17 home games.
OSU got within 57-56 and then within 59-58 with 34 seconds to play. But Oregon hit all six of its free throws in the final 27 seconds to hold the Beavers off.
“We're proud of their effort and they battled to the end but this is one we should have gotten,” OSU coach Wayne Tinkle said. “There were four or five plays that stand out,” as being decisive.
“We had opportunities but give credit to them. They made plays. It was there for the taking. I love the guys and love how they battled but this is a tough one because it's one we should have had.”
Tinkle shook up his lineup and started walk-on Oregonians Matt Dahlen, Justin Stangel, Tanner Sanders, AJ Hedgecock and Dylan Livesay.
“I thought on the way home from the Bay Area trip that we have no seniors to celebrate a Senior Night,” Tinkle said. “It was something I wanted to do to honor our guys.
“It was the Civil War and I though starting walk-on Oregon kids would be a heck of a way to pay tribute to all they have meant to us. It was to honor those guys for their commitment to the program.
“It was the right thing to do and moving forward I think it sends a pretty important message to our group about what is important to us, to our program and to our priorities.”
Oregon jumped to an 8-0 lead but the Beavers recovered strongly and built a 28-19 lead with 5:05 left. However, the Ducks closed the half on a 13-4 run to pull even at the break.
The Beavers scored the first six points of the second half on successive 3-pointers by Duvivier and Schaftenaar for a 38-32 lead. Oregon responded with a 7-0 run to go back ahead 39-38 and neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way.
OSU now heads to Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament, which starts on March 11. OSU's seed and opening-round opponent will be determined after the Pac-12's regular season concludes this weekend. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
