Beavers Fade in Second Half at Stanford
February 27, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Palo Alto, Calif. – Junior guard Gary Payton II led Oregon State with 17 points but the Beavers faded in the second half and fell 75-48 to Stanford on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
Payton added four assists and three steals for the Beavers (17-11, 8-8 Pac-12), who were outscored 47-18 in the second half. Payton II is the only player in the Pac-12 with at least one steal in every game.
Stanford used a 22-4 midway through the second half to break open what was a close, competitive game. The Cardinal led 42-39 with 11:29 after a basket by Malcolm Duvivier but the Beavers then went scoreless for nearly four minutes. The Cardinal then pulled away with 13 unanswered points to take a 55-39 lead and OSU didn't get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
The Beavers went cold in the second half, shooting just .208 (5-24) from the floor and .125 (1-8) from 3-point range. They were also outrebounded 46-22 and Stanford's 16 offensive rebounds led to 12 second-chance points.
“They got out in transition on us, and we couldn't get any baskets," Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "They were blocking shots, we were missing free throws and we didn't do anything to try to stem the tide. We used some timeouts, but we couldn't respond. I don't know if our guys just spent themselves in the first half or what. When you're struggling to score, you've got to take advantage of opportunities at the rim, opportunities at the stripe.”
OSU led 30-28 at halftime despite giving up the final five points before the break. The Beavers used a 13-1 run to erase an 18-15 deficit and led 28-19 with 2:52 remaining in the half.
Two baskets by freshman guard Tanner Sanders and 3-pointers from Olaf Schaftenaar and Langston Morris-Walker fueled the uprising. However, OSU missed the front end of a bonus and had a turnover in the final minute that led to five unanswered Cardinal points.
Payton II had 10 points, three assists and three steals in the first half. Stanford stayed close by outscoring the Beavers 11-1 from the foul line; they had 12 attempts to OSU's three.
That trend did not change in the second half. Stanford was in the bonus with 14 minutes left, in the double bonus with eight minutes left, and outscored OSU 22-8 from the foul line.
The Beavers shook up their lineup somewhat as junior Jarmal Reid got the call instead of Schaftenaar, who was under the weather. Schaftenaar had started the previous 27 games. Junior center Daniel Gomis wore a mask to protect a broken nose sustained in the Feb. 21 win over Colorado but still started.
The Beavers conclude their road season at noon Sunday at California; the game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks. They finish the regular season at 8 p.m. Wednesday against Oregon at Gill Coliseum.
