Beavers End First Weekend In Surprise
February 16, 2015 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Dane Lund and KJ Harrison each recorded two hits Monday in Oregon State's 5-2 loss to New Mexico at Surprise Stadium.
The game marked the final of the first weekend of play for the Beavers, who are due to stay in Surprise for another tournament beginning Thursday against Oklahoma State. Oregon State went 2-2 during the first weekend, defeating Northwestern and Michigan State before losing twice to New Mexico.
Harrison tripled and singled in the loss, driving in two runs in the process. He has hit safely in all four games this season, and of his seven hits, has four for extra bases – two triples and two home runs. He now leads the Beavers with five runs driven in.
Lund, meanwhile, singled and doubled – the first two hits of his Oregon State career. Getting the start behind the plate, he also threw out one of two runners attempting to steal.
Caleb Hamilton joined KJ Harrison as Oregon State players who have hit safely in all four games. Hamilton, who started at short, singled in the fourth inning.
Jake Thompson started for the Beavers and worked four innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs and was saddled with the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the year.
The win went to New Mexico reliever Tyler Stevens, who came on after starter Carson Schneider. Stevens allowed one hit with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings to improve to 1-0.
Carl Stajduhar had three hits to pace the Lobos.
New Mexico (3-1 overall) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run second inning. The Beavers shrunk that lead to just a run when Harrison tripled to the gap in right in the third, bringing two runs home. The Lobos, however, added to their lead with two runs in the fifth off Thompson.
