February 13, 2015 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Andrew Moore tossed seven innings of one-run baseball and Mitch Hickey picked up his first career win in his first outing as the Beavers downed Northwestern, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
Oregon State loaded the bases with one down in the bottom half of the ninth against Wildcats' reliever Tommy Bordignon. While pitching to Trever Morrison, the right-hander hitched before going to the plate, allowing Joe Gillette to come in from third. Gillette was pinch running for Logan Ice, who led off the inning with a single.
The win gives the Beavers their sixth consecutive opening day victory.
Moore wasn't credited with a decision but was stellar in seven innings of work. He scattered five hits and a run with nine strikeouts. His only run allowed came in the third when Scott Heelan doubled to left.
The Beavers tied the score in the sixth when KJ Harrison opened the inning with a triple to the gap in right center. His first career hit set the table for sophomore Billy King, who was pinch hitting. He doubled over the left fielder's head on a pitch from Northwestern starter Brandon Magallones.
Elliott Cary, also making his collegiate debut, went 2-for-4 to pace the Beavers, who finished the game with eight off five Northwestern pitchers.
Hickey came on in relief of Moore in the eighth and was solid through two innings. The righty struck out two and allowed just one hit, in the ninth, while throwing 28 pitches. He earned the win.
Oregon State continues play Saturday against Michigan State. First pitch from Surprise Stadium is slated for 12 p.m. PT (1 p.m. in Arizona).
