Nobach Singles To Win In 10th
February 14, 2015 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Kyle Nobach singled with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to send Oregon State to a 4-3 win over Michigan State Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
Nobach came to the plate with the bases loaded against Michigan State closer Jeff Kinley and sharply singled up the middle on a 1-2 pitch to bring Logan Ice in from third. Ice and KJ Harrison had opened the inning on consecutive walks, moved to second and third, respectively, on a sac bunt from Tyler Mildenberg, and watched as Caleb Hamilton was walked intentionally to load the bases.
The win is the Beavers' second walkoff win in as many days as OSU took defeated Northwestern Friday on a “balk off.”
Travis Eckert started his first career game for the Beavers (2-0 overall) and worked six full innings, scattering five hits and a run with two walks and two strikeouts. He did not figure in the decision. The win went to reliever Sam Tweedt, the Beavers' fifth pitcher of the game, who struck out one en route to the final two outs of the top of the 10th.
Alex Troop took the loss for Michigan State (1-1).
Oregon State jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings. Hamilton opened the game's scoring with a single to right in the first. KJ Harrison made it 2-0 when his solo home run found the grass berm above the left center fence in the third inning. It was his first career home run and the Beavers' first of the season.
Michigan State scored in the sixth to pull within one, but Nobach's first hit of the day, a double in the bottom half of the sixth, pushed the Beavers to the 3-1 lead.
A single and sacrifice fly in the eighth for Michigan State tied the game at three, setting up Nobach's extra-inning heroics.
Nobach, Harrison and Billy King all had two hits to pace the Beavers, who finished with 10 off four Spartan pitchers. Michigan State, meanwhile, tallied seven, and was led by Cam Gibson's two.
OSU plays its third game in as many days Sunday when taking on New Mexico at Surprise Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT (4 p.m. in Arizona). The game will be live on the Beaver Sports Radio Network with live stats and a free live audio link available by visiting osubeavers.com.
