LOWELL, Ore. - The Oregon State women's rowing team started off its 2012 campaign in fine fashion on Saturday morning, claiming victory in three of five races against the University of Victoria at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. The Beavers won one varsity eight race and had first-place finishes in both the varsity and novice fours.
"I thought our team was really strong today," Head Coach Emily Ford said. "It wasn't our best day technically, but there was a lot of fight. The University of Victoria has put together one of the best squads I've seen and they were excellent competition for us. Hopefully we will take the grit and determination we showed today and layer in a better technical performance for next week. It was a good start for the team."
In its victories, Oregon State grabbed the lead right away and gradually opened up the margin throughout the race. The second varsity 8 of Lin Hill (coxswain), Nicole Hook, Ellen Pesek, Andrea Harvey, Lauren Morgenthaler, Agne Pack, Kayla Laney, Saasha Bruce and Tina Vernazza came across the line in a winning time of 6:48.7.
The varsity 4 of Rita Hepler (coxswain), Katie Zimmerman, Jana Sobrosa, Alexa Ortiz and Beth Lewis won with a time of 7:35.3 while the novice 4 of Hailey Page (coxswain), Catie Coleman, Ester Gordon, Krista Soderlund and Rachel Logan claimed victory in 8:19.8.
The first varsity 8 was dead even all the way down the course, with Victoria getting the win on a last-minute surge in an extremely close race.
In the novice 8 race, OSU's `A' boat was even with Victoria before it caught two boat-stopping crabs.
The teams raced on Dexter Lake's 2,000-meter course that begins at the covered bridge on the east side of the lake running down two full buoyed lines northwest towards the OAR boathouse for the finish line.
Oregon State will be back on the water next Saturday, March 17, when it hosts another race at Dexter Lake, this time against Gonzaga.
