Women's Rowing Dominates Races Against Gonzaga

LOWELL, Ore. - Building on an already strong start to the 2012 season, the Oregon State women's rowing team posted another string of stellar results in its second weekend on the water, this time winning five of six races against Gonzaga at Dexter Lake on Saturday morning.
"The team made nice progress this week after last weekend's races against the University of Victoria," Head Coach Emily Ford said. "The learning that takes place in these early races is critical to the success later in the season. Gonzaga is a strong opponent that taught us a lot about ourselves. I liked the tone of the races and if we continue to hone our skills, I think we'll be able to continue putting strong races together as the season unfolds."
The Beavers claimed victory in both Varsity 8+ races, one Varsity 4+ and both the Novice 8+ and Novice 4+ events.
In all of its wins, OSU's entries got out to early leads and widened the gap as the race progressed.
Oregon State's first Varsity 8+ of Bonnie Chilibeck (coxswain), Melissa Sloan, Karly Laney, Anna Taylor, Gillian Cooper, Leslie Greer, Leslie Urban, Amy McKee and Hilary Polis posted a solid 11-second win over Gonzaga, finishing in 6:47.70.
In the second Varsity 8+ race the Beavers walked away in victory yet again, as Lin Hill (coxswain), Nicole Hook, Ellen Pesek, Andrea Harvey, Lauren Morgenthaler, Agne Pack, Kayla Laney, Saasha Bruce and Tina Vernazza guided their boat to the finish line in 6:52.15, six seconds ahead of the Bulldogs.
The Beavers won both novice races, with the team's 8+ entry finish in 7:11.5 to Gonzaga's 7:22.6 and OSU's 4+ `A' winning with a time of 8:15.6, a full 19 seconds ahead of the Bulldogs.
Oregon State also won one of two Varsity 4+ races, with Rita Hepler (coxswain), Katie Zimmerman, Jana Sobrosa, Alexa Ortiz and Beth Lewis defeating Gonzaga in a time of 7:46.58.
OSU will have two weeks off before the team heads to California to participate in the San Diego Crew Classic on March 31 and April 1.
