OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Craig Robinson
On little things adding up:
“When you play a team that's this experienced and this good you have to come up with the loose balls, or at least some of them, and when you get a great three point shooting team like this to miss those shots you have to come up with the rebounds. I thought we did a pretty good job against their match-up and you just have to convert some of those shots that we had the opportunity to make.”
On the reason behind the team's struggle:
“I don't think that we're at a point where any one person is that sort of catalyst for us playing poorly, it's more of a global thing with us. We could have any one of the five guys on the court do something so out of character that it's demoralizing. There were a couple times where we fought for thirty-three seconds and got them to take a bad shot, and they got the rebound. That has everything to do with that one play and player but it happens at different spots, so we can't put that kind of pressure on Roeland (Schaftenaar) to have a good start all the time because there are other guys who play this game.”
On going to the Bay Area next week:
“I told the guys that we have a lot of basketball left and we're playing a really good team, another team that's going to be fighting for the championship. It would also be a little irresponsible to compare this coming weekend to last year. There's a different air going to places when you feel like you're expected to win this year. We won't be able to sneak up on people, they're giving us their best games, so this experience is going to be completely different and we're just going to handle it one day at a time.”
On what went well this game:
“It was really nice to get our shooting game going. It was probably as good as it has been all season. We cannot just dwell on the negatives. I was really happy with the way we made shots and against a team that plays such great defense, so I'm actually still pretty positive about our effort.”
OREGON STATE JUNIOR GUARD Calvin Haynes
On Arizona State's match-up zone:
“It's a tough defense. It's one of those defenses that makes you slow down and think about every pass, every play as you come down. It's one of those zones that you have to keep moving, you can't just stand in one spot and shoot threes because once they get going it's over.”
On what they need to focus on:
“We need to focus on missed assignments and locating the shooter; the ones that make shots, which is Abbott, Kuksiks and Glasser. We need to shade towards them but this time we just didn't get there.”
On getting ready for next week:
“We have to go back to the drawing boards and do the same thing we do every time. Monday we're going to go back and practice at 5:30 and do things that the coaching staff asks us to do. They do a great job of giving us information on our opponents and on what players can and can't do.”
ARIZONA STATE HEAD COACH HERB SENDEK
On the game…
“What a hard fought game. Guys were getting after it on both sides. Guys just battled, there was nothing artistic about it. Oregon State battled, too.”
On Oregon State defense…
“Oregon State has an excellent defense and it's hard to prepare for. You aren't going to teach your guys that defense between Thursday and Saturday.”
On Oregon State…
“Coach (Robinson) does a great job with his team. They are hard to prepare for. I've been saying this for a long time, I really like their team. I've said that since I've been coming up here. I have tremendous respect for guys like (Schaftenaar), Haynes, the Tarvers and Wallace was really shooting the ball well.”
On the shooting difference between the first and second halves…
“It comes down to executing. Things are never as bad as they seem. We had some good looks and we didn't make them. That stretch there in the second half, we made shots. If the ball is going in it makes all the difference in the world.”
On Arizona State…
“I was so proud of the effort. They played so hard. At the same time, I don't take anything away from Oregon State, because I think they played really hard too. I think it was a hard fought college basketball game. You hate to see anyone lose because everyone laid it on the line.”
