CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State got 20 points from Brian Jackson and withstood Denver's second-half rally to take a 70-63 victory in non-league men's basketball Saturday night at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers (5-2) saw the Pioneers (1-5) erase OSU's 17-point second-half lead before putting the game away in the final 10 minutes.
Jackson, a highly-recruited 6-foot-9 freshman forward, was 5-for-7 from the field and 9-for-12 at the free throw line in his first home game. He had missed Oregon State's first five games of the season with a knee injury, but the effort against Denver followed a 12-point game in a Dec. 4 loss at Colorado State.
Jason Heide added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon State, with all his scoring coming in the first half, and Jimmie Haywood added 11 points and six assists for OSU. Wahhab Carter led Denver with 19 points while Arthur Ireland had 13.
The Beavers were without all-conference guard Deaundra Tanner, who was suspended for one game for violating unspecified team rules. OSU still managed to build 45-28 lead early in the second half.
Denver then scored 15 straight points in just 2:15, pulling within 45-43 on Carter's jumper with 15:03 remaining. During that stretch, the Pioneers shot 6-for-7 from the field - including 3-for-3 on 3-pointers - with Arthur Ireland scoring seven points.
Denver drew even at 48-48 when Ireland hit a 3-pointer with 12:40 left, but were never able to take the lead. Oregon State ran off seven straight points of its own, with Jackson scoring four of them and assisting on another basket, and Pioneer center Steve Simmons and guard Ty Church both fouled out during that time.
The Beavers eventually pushed the lead back to 65-55 with just over a minute remaining. They were aided by a 12-minute stretch in which Denver shot 2-for-17 from the field, with the Pioneers' only baskets coming on fast-break layins.
Denver head coach Marty Fletcher was ejected with 4:15 to play after drawing his second technical foul of the game. His first technical foul came as both teams and the officials were leaving the floor at halftime, the Pioneers' Tom Starkey was also called for a technical foul midway through the second half.
