Mendez Silences Portland, Beavers Take Midweek Matchup
May 12, 2026 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Connor Mendez tossed 6 1/3 innings of two-hit baseball and Josh Proctor delivered a three-run triple in a four-run third inning as No. 7 Oregon State defeated Portland 8-3 Tuesday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Mendez (2-3) was sharp from the outset, scattering two hits while walking one and striking out three across 70 pitches in his longest outing of the season. The right-hander retired 16 straight at one stretch and did not allow a run until the seventh, when Leo Cote's groundout plated Trey Swygart. Tanner Douglas, AJ Hutcheson and Isaac Yeager combined to finish for the Beavers who won their seventh consecutive game and improved to 41-11 on the year.
Proctor's two-out triple down the right-field line in the third broke the game open, clearing the bases to give Oregon State a 4-0 lead. The junior left fielder finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, his 10th multi-RBI game of the season.
Offensively, Oregon State pieced together offensive via 11 hits and seven walks. Oregon State also did not strike out, the first time the Beavers have gone without a K since 2016 against Minnesota.
Adam Haight (2-for-4, three RBI), Jacob Galloway (2-for-4) and Tyler Inge (2-for-4) each collected multiple hits. The Beavers were 5-for-12 with two outs and advanced runners on 14-of-27 opportunities.
Oregon State broke through in the second when AJ Singer drew a bases-loaded walk to score Galloway, who had reached on an error and advanced on a Tyler Inge single. The Beavers then sent nine men to the plate in the third. Paul Vazquez was hit by a pitch, Ethan Porter walked, and Haight reached on a fielder's choice that scored before Proctor's triple cleared the bases. Galloway followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 5-0.
Singer led off the fourth with a double down the right-field line, then scored on Haight's single through the left side for a 6-0 cushion. The Beavers added two more in the sixth when Hubbard reached on an error, Porter singled, then Haight doubled to left-center, bringing them both in.
Portland (25-24) cut into the deficit in the seventh on Cote's RBI groundout and added two more in the eighth when Cole Katayama-Stall sent a 1-2 pitch over the right-field wall for his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot that scored Landon Kauffman. Hutcheson struck out the next batter he faced to get out of the inning, and Yeager came on with one down and one on in the ninth, inducing a double play to end the game.
Carter Gaston (4-3) took the loss for the Pilots, surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings.
Oregon State has won seven straight and improved to 19-5 at home.
The Beavers open a three-game series with Air Force Thursday night at 5:35 p.m. PT at Goss Stadium.
