Defense Dominant in Alumni Weekend Win Over San Diego
January 29, 2026 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Kennedie Shuler scored a career-high 24 points and Oregon State's stifling second-half defense carried the Beavers to a 61-43 victory over San Diego in the first game of Alumni Weekend at Gill Coliseum.
Â
Oregon State (16-6, 8-1 WCC) has now won 10 of its last 11 games and remains atop the West Coast Conference standings. The Beavs picked up their latest win in front of more than 35 alumni with registrants for the weekend back with their old teammates including players from five different decades of Beaver Basketball.
Â
"It was amazing to see so many alumni come back this weekend. It was like a big ol' family reunion up there," head coach Scott Rueck said. "You can just tell how much the experience at Oregon State has meant to all of these people. It's like a sisterhood. It's so deep. I love that aspect of our program so much. To see it all happen is so rewarding."
Â
Shuler's career day scoring came on efficient 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. She also contributed seven rebounds, three steals, three assists and a block in yet another excellent all-around performance.
Â
Tiara Bolden added 14 points with eight rebounds, while Jenna Villa distributed four assists. The Beavs dished out 10 assists on 21 field goals, with Villa leading the way as a passer to combat USD's attempts to take away her offense.
Â
Oregon State took control in the second half, holding San Diego to just 13 points over the final two quarters—the second-fewest points allowed in a half during WCC play this season. The Toreros shot 16 percent from the floor after halftime, managing only 1-of-12 shooting in the third quarter.
Â
Leading 32-30 at halftime and 44-37 after three quarters, the Beavs surged with a 10-0 run from Shuler, Bolden and Ally Schimel in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Thirteen of Shuler's points came in the final 20 minutes.
Â
Oregon State's defense clamped down in the second half, holding San Diego to just 13 points over the final 20 minutes. For the game, the Beavers shot 44 percent from the floor while limiting the Toreros to just 29 percent shooting. OSU held USD to 19 percent from three-point range, connecting on just 3-of-16 attempts.
