Beavers Battle Wind, Pick Up Wins in Vegas
March 03, 2024 | Men's Rowing
LAS VEGAS – Oregon State's Varsity 8 picked up two victories on a windy weekend at the Lake Las Vegas Invite.
The Beavers stayed flexible despite the weather causing several changes in the schedule – including the cancellation of Sunday's racing – and a re-race in the weekend's first event.
"In true Vegas fashion, you can always bet that that odds are high Mother Nature will always win. Saturday started out with the winds predicted to be very high. However, we found a window to get the racing in," said head coach Gabe Winkler. "The varsity rowed well enough to win their first piece against Drexel and USD. But since the course was not clearly outlined and had confusion of what points to follow, the referee declared a rerow, 20 minutes later. The guys took it in stride but couldn't replicate the same race and lost to a very strong Drexel crew. They rallied and rowed very well in extremely difficult winds to beat Santa Clara and USD in the next round of racing. It was chaotic and unpredictable everywhere you looked. Unfortunately the house took all the chips on Sunday and we had to cancel that session. I like this race for getting some great selection in and jump starting the season. Now back to training."
OSU won that event, defeating Drexel and San Diego before slipping behind the Dragons in the re-row after the teams raced the wrong course 20 minutes before. The Beavs then won the day's final race over San Diego and Santa Clara, outpacing the WCC teams by four and six seconds, respectively.
The JV squad only got one race in on the weekend, dropping it to Drexel.
The Beavers now have a couple weeks to get back to work before hosting Gonzaga, Santa Clara and UC San Diego in a March 23rd showdown on Dexter Lake.
