Beavers Pick Up Five Wins in Six Chances on Dexter
March 24, 2024 | Men's Rowing
DEXTER, Ore. – Oregon State men's rowing picked up five wins in six races on Saturday and Sunday on Dexter Lake.
The racing on Saturday morning went off without a hitch as the Beavs picked up three wins in four chances before weather resulted in moving much of what was the Saturday afternoon session to Sunday morning. Oregon State won both races over Gonzaga on Sunday.
"There are some days you go to Dexter and it is an idyllic setting, with pristine water and the green mountains are covered with mist that make you say, 'This place is awesome.' Then there are days where the wind creates 2 foot troughs and white cap waves. Both of those characteristics showed up this weekend," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "The morning racing went off smoothly, with racing 4 boats across. But the afternoon was comically bad. We put the rest of the scheduled racing on Sunday morning where there wasn't a whisper of wind throughout. We won nearly everything. The only blemish was losing to an impressive UCSD varsity. They seemed to have stepped up their game. But in all the boats, the racing was extremely professional and well executed. This is an excellent start to our spring break."
The Beavers' 2V8+ boat had an excellent weekend with two wins in two opportunities while the Varsity 8 placed second in a four-boat race before bouncing back with a win on Sunday over Gonzaga.
Oregon State's 3V8 and 4V8 boats each won their lone races on the weekend with the third varsity picking up an 11-second victory over Gonzaga and 18-second win over Santa Clara to open the weekend.
