October 22, 2024 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team completed their annual Orange and Black Duals to determine the lineup ahead of the 2024-25 season.
In the first bout of the night at 174 lbs., Sean Harman built up a 6-1 lead in the first period – with 1:19 of riding time – to win via major decision over Graham Gambrall at 11-2. The West Linn, Ore., product clocked nearly three minutes of riding time (2:58) to secure the win.
Mason Christiansen (184 lb.) used a decision at 4-1 to win the bout over TJ McDonnell. After a scoreless first, Christiansen used an escape for the bout's first lead and then added a takedown for the 4-0 lead. McDonnell cut the lead to three in the third with an escape.
Needing an extra meeting to decide the winner, McDonnell won the rematch at 4-1. Never trailing, McDonnell utilized just one takedown in the first and an escape in the second to hold on for the win.
Making the move up a class to 197, Trey Munoz quickly racked up the necessary points to claim a win by technical fall over Vaun Halstead. The two-time defending All-American at 184 needed a little fewer than two frames (1:36) to get the win at 19-4.
In the heavyweight bout, Brett Mower clocked nearly two minutes of riding time (1:45) on the way to an 8-3 win at decision over Charley Hastriter. He pulled away late – leading by just a 3-2 line after two – allowing just a late escape to build up the five-point win.
Maximo Renteria used dominant second and third periods to win his bout over Hunter Taylor at 125 lbs. Clocking 2:18 of riding time, Renteria took a win by decision at 8-1. Never trailing, he turned an early 3-0 lead to the five-point win, thanks to the riding time bonus.
Keeping the momentum from a last-second takedown in the second, Damion Elliott secured the 133-lb. bout with the last four points in a 4-1 win over Gabe Whisenhunt. Entering the second after a scoreless first, Whisenhunt struck first with an escape before Elliott took the late lead and didn't look back.
Coming back from deficits of 3-0 and 6-5 after the first two frames, Nash Singleton picked up the win over Chase DeBlaere in the 141-ib. bout at decision by a score of 8-6. Behind for the majority of the battle, Singleton used one final takedown in the waning seconds to win.
Victor Jacinto took charge of the momentum in the 149-lb. bout in the final frame, outscoring Ayden Garver 4-1 on the way to taking it at 7-3 by decision.
The first bout to need sudden victory on the night, Ethan Stiles used the necessary takedown to claim the 157-lb. bout over Christopher Hamblin, 8-5. In a bout that went back-and-forth, both held leads after frames: Stiles 3-1 after the first and Hamblin 5-4 after the second, Stiles' escape to open the third sent it to the extra period.
Also needing a period more to decide the winner, Kekana Fouret overcame a 5-3 deficit to win 8-5 after a decisive takedown in sudden victory. Fouret trailed by two at 5-3 before recording a late takedown to force Murphy Menke into the extra, decisive overtime.
The Beavers will open the season next Saturday night, November 2nd, against Iowa. FloWrestling will broadcast the dual, slated to begin at 7 p.m.
