SCOUTING THE LIONS:
LMU enters Wednesday's game after a split weekend against two ranked opponents. After falling at home to No. 10 Santa Clara, the Lions responded in a big way with a 3-0 road win at No. 13 Pepperdine. Kylie Dobbs ranks second in the WCC for scoring with nine goals this season while her four game-winners is first. The Lions boast one of the top defenses in the conference, allowing 15 goals in 14 games, with the goals allowed average of 1.07 ranking third.
TOP OF THE TABLE:
Five games into its first of two seasons in the West Coast Conference, Oregon State is in the midst of a six-game unbeaten streak and sitting in a tie with Santa Clara atop the table with four wins and one scoreless draw. The team's goals allowed average of 0.80 ranks second-best while McKenna Martinez (three) and Carly Carraher (two) sit in the top-10 among all players for goals scored against conference opponents while all three of Paola Figueroa's assists have come during conference action, which ranks fourth.
BRACE FOR IMPACT:
Last time Oregon State played was on Oct. 12 at San Diego in a game that proved to be the Carly Carraher show. The senior forward scored OSU's first two goals in a 3-1 win, her first career brace that put her at second on the team in goals scored this season with three, while also setting a new career high for a single season.
LEGEND:
Using the momentum of Carraher's goals, it was McKenna Martinez who sealed the victory for Oregon State, finishing in the to put OSU ahead, 3-0, with less than 20 minutes to play. Martinez's goal was her fourth this season and third in her last four appearances, while also bringing the senior forward into sole possession of third place on the program's all-time goal scoring list with 32. She now sits behind Val Williams (34) and Jodie Taylor (47).
The Richland, Wash., native is also close to becoming the program's all-time leader in total shots, currently sitting at 264 for her career, which is five away from Taylor's program record of 269.
HAPPY TO HELP:
A senior from Seoul, South Korea, Rin Choi has appeared in seven games this season, including each of the last three. Against San Diego, Choi was credited with an assist on Martinez's game-sealing score, her first this season and second as a Beaver, having assisted the opening goal in a 2-0 victory last season. Through seven appearances in 2024, Choi has tallied one shot across 202 minutes played.
FOUND A HOME:
After starting the season in the central part of the Oregon State defense, Paola Figueroa has since moved to the wide part of the formation and found great success. Since making her first start out wide against Seattle U on Sept. 8, the Lancaster, Calif., native has started every single game, never playing fewer than 75 minutes in a match. During conference play, Figueroa has taken her game to a new level with three assists, including a helper on the Carraher's first goal against San Diego.
With three assists, Figueroa is now tied with Katie Godden for the top mark on the team.
FINISH:
Oregon State finished the 2023 season with 16 goals in 19 games, averaging 0.84 per game. Through 13 contests in 2024, the Beavers have already surpassed that total, scoring 18 goals and averaging 1.38 per contest despite the season still having five games to play. Total shots are up from 12.3 per game to 12.8 and shots are hitting the target at a 3.5% higher clip (38.5% compared to 41.9%), but the key to this uptick in goal is better finishing; the 2024 Beavers are converting 10.8% of their shots into goals compared to 6.8% in 2023.
MULTI-FACETED:
A key part of OSU's improved goal scoring has been its ability to get production from several different players. Through 13 games, five different Beavers have found the back of the net at least twice, led by Martinez's four; she is joined by Carraher (three), Valerie Tobias (two), Megin Turi (two) and Hayden Wilson (two).
The last time Oregon State had five or more score at least two goals in a season was 2021, when OSU scored 38 total goals and averaged 2.0 per game.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Beavers' three-game homestand continues on Saturday, hosting Pepperdine at Paul Lorenz Field. Kickoff against the Waves is scheduled for 12 p.m.
