Late Momentum Not Enough in Loss to LMU
October 23, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – McKenna Martinez netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 83rd minute of a 2-1 home loss to the Loyola Marymount Lions on Wednesday at Paul Lorenz Field.
Martinez finished the game with a team-high eight shots, three of which were on target. Though her goal came in the 83rd minute, the senior forward was mere inches away from tying the game in the 31st minute off a direct free kick, but her shot from just outside the 18 careened off the woodwork.
With eight shots, Martinez is now up to 272 as a Beaver, which is the new program record. Jodie Taylor (2004-07) held the previous record at 269.
Valerie Tobias played the ball in that Paola Figueroa redirected to Martinez for her goal, with the duo now up to three and four assists on the season, respectively. Figueroa's four helpers leads the team and, with every single one coming during conference play, puts her in a tie for first place among all players for assists against WCC opponents.
Oregon State finished with a season-high 21 shots, leveling the Lions with eight on goal. Martinez, Tobias (three shots, two SOG), Carly Carraher (three shots, two SOG) and Katie Godden (two shots, one SOG) led the way for the Beaver attack.
Mya Sanchez made six saves in net for the Beavers, continuing her strong junior season. With 72 in total, Sanchez leads the conference in total saves while posting a save percentage of 76.6.
OSU returns to action on Saturday, hosting No. 20 Pepperdine. Kickoff at Paul Lorenz is scheduled for 12 p.m.
