Beavers Extend Unbeaten Streak to Six with 3-1 Win
October 12, 2024 | Women's Soccer
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Carly Carraher scored twice as Oregon State women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to six games on Saturday, defeating San Diego, 3-1, at Torero Stadium.
Carraher's brace was the first of her career, and it started less than 20 minutes into the game. Off a feed from Paola Figueroa, the 5-7 senior cut on to her right foot and fired from the edge of the box, finding the far post. She added her second of the game in the 70th minute, tapping in a rebounded effort through the legs of the USD 'keeper to double the Beaver lead.
For Carraher, Saturday's effort puts her at second on the team in goals scored this season with three, while also setting a new career high for a single season. Figueroa's assist put her in a tie for the team lead in helpers with Katie Godden, each assisting on three goals this season.
Using the momentum of Carraher's 70th minute goal, it was McKenna Martinez who sealed the victory for Oregon State, finishing in the 73rd minute off a feed from Rin Choi to put OSU ahead, 3-0, with less than 20 minutes to play.
Martinez's goal was her fourth this season and third in her last four appearances, while also bringing the senior forward into sole possession of third place on the program's all-time goal scoring list with 32. She sits behind Val Williams (34) and Jodie Taylor (47).
Though the hosts would break the clean sheet soon after Martinez's goal, OSU's defense locked the Toreros down for the remaining 17 minutes to seal the victory.
For the second-consecutive game, Oregon State out-shot its opponent, posting a 17-11 advantage in total shots while holding a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Mya Sanchez, the reigning conference Defensive Player of the Week, made five saves and increased her season save percentage to 76.7.
Saturday's three goal barrage puts the team at 18 for the season, which surpassed last year's total of 16, despite the schedule still featuring five more games to play. Carraher's brace makes it five Beavers who have scored at least two goals this season, which is something Oregon State hasn't done since the 2021 season.
With three more points, OSU takes a commanding lead in the WCC table, sitting at first place with 13 points through five games (four wins, one draw) at the halfway mark of conference action.
Oregon State will now get an extended break, beginning a three-game home stand at Paul Lorenz Field some 11 days from now on Oct. 23, hosting LMU.
