Beavers Fall to No. 21 Washington State
September 28, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Pullman, Wash. – Oregon State (8-1-0) battled through rain and cold temperatures, but ultimately dropped its first match of the 2019 season to No. 21 Washington State (8-1-0) on Saturday night, 2-1.
"I'm proud of our team for battling," said head coach Matt Kagan. "Washington State is a top-25 team for a reason. In the end, they got their foot on one more ball than we did in the box. We will regroup and get ready for Utah next Thursday."
OSU and WSU traded shot attempts back-and-forth to start the game. Oregon State went on the attack with Paula Leblic and Abby Schwartz each getting back-to-back shot attempts in the sixth minute of play before Washington State recorded a shot in the seventh and ninth minute of play. The two teams traded shots again in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, but both team's keepers came up with crucial saves.
Redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert received a long pass from sophomore Sydney Studer from deep in Beaver territory in the 29th minute of play. Studer placed the ball in position for Weinert to maneuver past two Cougar defenders and the WSU keeper to net her seventh goal of the season, and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Washington State leveled the score in the 67th minute off a penalty kick following an OSU handball inside the box. Weinert attempted to reclaim the lead for the Beavers less than a minute after WSU's goal, but the shot went straight into the hands of WSU's goalkeeper.
The Cougars officially took the lead after getting the ball past the OSU defense in the 72nd minute. Redshirt freshman Kiah Dayton attempted a shot for the Beavers late in the 89th minute that WSU's keeper was able to save and seal the Cougar's victory.
WSU outshot the Beavers 21-8 on the night. Sophomore goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba came up with five saves to push her season total to 22.
Oregon State returns to action at 6 p.m. PT on Oct. 3 in Salt Lake City, Utah taking on the Utes before traveling to Boulder, Colo. to take on Colorado on Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. PT. Both games will be televised on Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Mountain.
