Conrad Scores, Beavers Battle Utah to Draw
October 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Salt Lake City, Utah – Freshman Sophie Conrad scores her second career goal as Oregon State (8-1-1, 0-1-1) and Utah (5-3-2, 0-0-2) battle through double overtime to a draw in Pac-12 action on Thursday night.
"I am extremely proud of our women for battling all night," said head coach Matt Kagan. "Utah is a well-coached and very organized team."
Redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert was the first Beavers to get a shot off in the 13th minute of action from five-yards outside the 18-yard box, but it was saved by the Utah goalkeeper. The Utes took the lead in 22nd minute off a throw in that Utah was able to work to the middle of the field and find the back of the net.
Freshman Brianna McReynolds attempted to level the score three-minutes later after maneuvering and defeating two Utah defenders before firing a shot on goal that Utah's keeper was once again able to get her hands on. The Beavers entered halftime trailing, 1-0.
Weinert tried to get things going early in the second half getting her head on the ball in the 50th minute that she sent towards the goal, unfortunately it sailed directly into the hands of the Ute's keeper. OSU was awarded a corner kick in the 59th minute that allowed sophomore Laura Galceran to get her head on, but it went over the top of the goal.
The Beavers continued to add the pressure with Galceran making a cross pass from the right corner to senior Paula Leblic in-front of the goal. Leblic settled the ball and got a shot off that was on target but was blocked by a Utah defender.
Junior Kaillen Fried fired a shot from 20-yards out that had the power behind it but was too high to find the net in the 72nd minute.
The match was leveled in the 75th minute when McReynolds pushed the ball through two defenders to the feet of Conrad deep in the right side of the box. Conrad used her right foot to slide the ball into the lower-left corner for her second goal of the season. Sophomore Sydney Studer tried to push the Beavers ahead in the final minutes of regulation, but wasn't able to find the back of the net.
The first overtime saw both teams only getting one shot a piece with Utah getting one look on goal in the 92nd minute, and senior Ashleigh Fonsen matching that in the 95th. In the second overtime, Conrad almost found the back of the net for the second time, but Utah's goalkeeper was able to get ahold of the ball, so the Beavers and Utes finished with a draw.
"We adapted in the second half and scored a great goal," continued Kagan. "We tried to push for the winner on multiple occasions. We will take a point on the road in the Pac-12 and move onto Colorado on Sunday!"
Sophomore goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba faced 12 shots and came away with two huge saves for the Beavers in crunch time. OSU finished with 11 shots on the night with Conrad, Studer and Weinert each taking two.
Oregon State continues Pac-12 road action in Boulder, Colo. against Colorado at 1 p.m. PT to wrap-up the weekend.
