Beavers Sweep Vikings to Close Rose City Showdown
August 31, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team, which played three consecutive five-set matches last week, earned its first sweep of the season taking down Portland State Friday evening at the Rose City Showdown.
Â
The Beavers, who improved their record to 4-1, defeated the Vikings (1-4) by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21.
Â
"We were certainly more focused this afternoon and the offense was much crisper," head coach Mark Barnard said. "Overall, we did a good job with what we can control. Our energy was better tonight, we passed better and got more swings in transition."
Â
Oregon State got out to a strong start with several spurts to take a 12-5 lead. Freshman setter spread the ball around with each of her offensive weapons tallying a kill early on as the Beavers opened the lead to 14-6. OSU continued to open the gap taking the opening set 25-14 behind a dominant offense that recorded 12 kills with a single error in the set. OSU was led by Maddie Goings with four kills and three from Amy Underdown.
Â
The second set was more of a back-and-forth affair with the Vikings finding their footing. Portland State opened a two-point lead for the first time at 17-15 forcing an Oregon State timeout. The Beavers came out of the break with a kill from Haylie Bennett and after a sideout rolled off a 4-0 run to recapture the lead at 20-18. Five straight kills against no errors pushed the Beavers to take the set, 25-22.
Â
OSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set as the Vikings committed three errors and Kayla Ellis registered her second service ace of the match. Portland State fought its way back to within a point, but the Beavers never ceded the lead. Oregon State pushed the lead out to 19-12 on an Underdown kill to force the Vikings into their final timeout. Underdown notched five kills and Goings four while Maddie Sheehan and Makenna Browne patrolled the back row with four digs apiece and OSU continued to pour on the pressure and the Beavers won the set 25-21 to sweep the match.
Â
Goings led the Beavers with 12 kills and seven digs and Underdown recorded 10 kills and nine digs. Grace Massey tallied 12 digs and Lindsey Schell notched five blocks to lead the defense.
Â
Game Notes: Maddie Goings registered 12 kills. She now has double-digit kills in all five matches this season … the Beavers spread the ball around extremely well early in the match with Lindsey Schell, Maddy Gravley, Maddie Goings, Maddie Sheehan, Amy Underdown and Haylie Bennett all recording a kill before anyone had as many as two kills.
Â
Next Up: The Beavers travel again next week to take part in the K-State Invitational. OSU will face Nebraska-Omaha, North Texas and Kansas State on the trip.
