Beavers Sweep Mavericks to Move to 5-1
September 07, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Oregon State volleyball team swept its second straight match Friday morning against Nebraska-Omaha at the K-State Invitational.
The Beavers improved to 5-1 defeating the Mavericks (3-4) by scores of 25-17, 32-30 and 25-23.
"This was another early morning match that we did not perform to the level we are capable of," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We were gifted a lot of points but we were unable to sustain any rhythm and we were sporadic in our attempt to string points together. We have a big one coming up tonight, we will need to be dramatically better."
Oregon State got off to an early lead forcing Omaha's first timeout at 9-4 in the opening set. A flurry of points by the Mavericks evened the score at 9-9 before the Beavers got their offense rolling. Kills by Lindsey Schell, Maddie Goings and Haylie Bennett put the Beavers up 16-12 and forced Omaha into its second timeout. Several sideouts brought the score to 20-15 at which point OSU took control of the set a series of kills from Schell, Amy Underdown and a pair from Goings. Grace Massey aced the defense to claim Set 1, 25-17.
Early in the second stanza, the Beavers went on a 5-0 run behind the serving of Massey, who notched her second ace of the match to take a 6-4 lead. OSU opened the lead to 16-12 when Bennett and Maddy Gravley teamed up for a block to force a timeout. Play evolved into a back-and-forth affair until a 4-0 run by the Mavericks knotted the score at 23. Each team fought off three set point advantages before the Beavers claimed the set, 32-30.
Following the break, Omaha took a quick lead 8-4 as the Beavers struggled on offense. However, a series of errors by both teams kept the score close. The Mavericks held the lead at 21-16 before the Beavers went on a 5-1 spurt highlighted by kills from Goings and Underdown followed by a block by Gravley and Bennett to close the gap to 22-21. A pair of kills by Underdown gave the Beavers the win taking the third set, 25-23.
"A couple nice runs from Maddie Goings saved us in the third set on two occasions, once trailing 8-4 and then trailing 22-18."
Underdown led the Beavers' offense 11 kills with Haylie Bennett and Goings each chipping in nine. Maddy Gravley led the defense at the net with five blocks while Grace Massey led four Beavers in double-figures with 18 digs.
Game Notes: Amy Underdown was the lone Beaver to reach double-digits with 11 kills. She added 16 digs for her team-leading fourth double-double of the season … Maddie Sheehan tied her career-best with 33 assists … the Beavers eked out the third set despite hitting a negative percentage (8 kills, 10 errors, 37 attackes; -.054).
Next Up: Oregon State plays against this evening when the Beavers take on Kansas State at 5:30 p.m. PST. The match will stream live on ESPN3. OSU concludes the K-State Invitational against North Texas, Saturday at 9 a.m. PST.
