Beavers Take Down No. 21 Iowa State in Five
August 25, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
AMES, Iowa – The Oregon State volleyball team defeated its first ranked opponent of the season, taking five sets in knocking off No. 21 Iowa State Saturday evening.
The Beavers took charge of the match early winning each of the first two sets, before rallying to win the fifth. Scores were 27-25, 25-19, 24-26, 18-25 and 16-14. OSU concluded the Iowa State Challenge with a 2-1 record, including a win Friday over Virginia, before falling earlier Saturday to Ole Miss. All three matches went five sets.
"Madison Goings had an outstanding game," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We really needed her to be good and she delivered, and Grace (Massey) played well too. We really had some good passing in this one and put our middles in good positions, especially early."
Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Goings paced the Beavers offense with a career-high 25 kills and added a team-high 17 digs for her first double-double of the season.
The first set was close most of the way before the Cyclones pulled away to 24-19 lead to gain set point, but a kill by Goings, her seventh of the set, changed the course. Freshman setter Maddie Sheehan rotated to serve and the Beavers quickly rolled off five more points including four service aces. OSU took a 25-24 lead before giving the serve back to the Cyclones. A kill by Daniela Vargas and a block by Vargas and Maddy Gravley gave the set to the Beavers, 27-25.
Oregon State led through most of the second set and used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 21-16 following a block by Gravley and Amy Underdown. The Beavers used a pair of Haylie Bennett kills to coast the rest of the way securing the set, 25-19, and a two set to none lead in the match.
In the third set, the Beavers trailed early fighting back to tie the score at 17 forcing an Iowa State timeout. A back-and-forth developed until OSU took the lead at 20-19. However, the Beavers could not hold the lead and lost the set 26-24.
After also dropping the fourth set (25-18), Oregon State came back to grab an early lead in the fifth going up 4-1. The Cyclones used a timeout to stem the tide and rolled off three in a row to tie the game. From there is was give and take with neither team able to gain a two-point lead until Lindsey Schell knocked down her 10th kill of the match, to give the Beavers the lead at 14-12. Again, Iowa State fought back to tie the score before Goings crushed her 25th kill and the Cyclones final shot went astray.
Junior transfer Montanna Gubrud drew the start at setter against the Cyclones as the Beavers also used freshman Maddie Sheehan in a 6-2 offensive system for the first time this season.
"We went to a two-setter system today and moved some people around and for the most part the players adjusted well. We still have work to do and need to continue to get better at putting our hitters in the best position, but this team kept hanging in there. Iowa State is a good team and we did a nice job blocking and slowing the ball down to get on offense."
OSU sophomore libero Grace Massey was named as the tournament MVP while Goings and Schell were each named to the Iowa State Challenge all-tournament team.
Game Notes: Oregon State evened its all-time series record with Iowa State at 1-1 … Maddie Goings posted a career-high 25 kills and added 17 digs for her first double-double of the season … Montanna Gubrud (30 assists, 11 digs) and Maddie Sheehan (27 assists, 14 digs) each recorded the first double-doubles of their OSU careers … Gubrud made her first career start at setter … Lindsey Schell finished with 10 kills, giving her double digits in all three matches of the Iowa State Challenge.
