Volleyball Makes It Two in a Row with Win Over Aggies
August 31, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team earned a win over UC Davis in the opening match of the Rose City Showdown Friday morning. With the win, the Beavers improved to 3-1 on the season.
Despite a slow start, the Beavers defeated the Aggies (3-2) in four sets by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 25-23 and 25-17.
"We were ugly in the way we played but found a way to win," head coach Mark Barnard said. "Every team has moments where they don't play well and have to find a way when you're not your best. Now we know we can get in a hole and still get out."
The Beavers trailed 20-16 in the opening set before calling for their second timeout. OSU slowly worked its way back behind a trio of kills by Amy Underdown, an ace by Maddie Sheehan and a pair of unforced errors by the Aggies to move into a tie at 22. A combo block by Lindsey Schell and Haylie Bennett gave OSU its first set point. OSU held on to take the set 25-23.
After dropping the second set, the Beavers again trailed early 6-3 before tallying four in a row to gain the lead. The match became a game of sideouts until a kill by Allison Hughes and a wild shot by the Aggies gave OSU a three point lead at 15-12. A block by Hughes and Maddy Gravley stretched the lead to 22-18 and the Beavers were able to hold on to the set 25-23.
Trailing 3-5 in the fourth set, OSU used a 4-0 run including a pair of kills by Maddie Goings to move up 7-5. Another 5-0 run for the Beavers capped by a Schell/Hughes block to extend the lead to 14-8. A pair of kills by Bennett moved Oregon State to a 20-13 lead. Schell and Bennett notched kills on the final two plays to secure the win 25-17 in set 4.
Underdown led the Beavers with 18 kills and 12 digs, while Goings added 15 kills and 12 digs as well. Grace Massey collected a team-high 23 digs and Kayla Ellis added a season-high 17 digs. Gravley notched four blocks.
"I thought Kayla Ellis was very good today, she brought really positive energy. We are using more of our roster to get the job done, which is very different than last year. But that's fine. We have depth and are finding that we can rely on different personnel in different situations."
Game Notes: Maddie Sheehan made her first career start for the Beavers. She is OSU's third setter to start through the season's first four matches … Makenna Browne tied her season-high with three digs … Oregon State registered 10 blocks. The Beavers have tallied double-digit blocks in all four matches in 2018.
Next Up: Oregon State is back on the court this evening facing Portland State at 6 p.m. to wrap up the Beavers' portion of the Rose City Showdown.
