Beavers Down Nebraska, 10-3
February 24, 2018 | Baseball
Trevor Larnach hit his fourth home run of the season in the win and Bryce Fehmel improved to 2-0
Larnach's towering home run to straightaway center in the first got the Oregon State offense started. The Beavers rapped out 12 hits against five Nebraska pitchers, including nine off starter Jake McSteen, who allowed seven runs in four innings to take the loss. He dropped to 1-1 on the year.
Steven Kwan, Kyle Nobach, Michael Gretler and Jack Anderson all had two hits in the win. Larnach's home run was his lone hit of the game, but he also walked twice.
Fehmel held Nebraska scoreless through three, and by then, the Beavers had already scored five runs. The junior right-hander ended his afternoon with three strikeouts and five hits allowed in 6 2/3 innings, improving to 2-0 on the year.
The Beavers (7-0 overall) scored three in the second, on a double play ball, single by Kwan, and on a strikeout by Cadyn Grenier. Nebraska (4-3) catcher Jesse Wilkening hit Grenier attempting to record an out at first after the ball was in the dirt, enabling Kwan to score from first.
Oregon State tacked on three more in the fifth on a sac fly by Nobach and a pair of wild pitches.
Nebraska finished with nine hits off Fehmel and relievers Brandon Eisert and Dylan Pearce. Luke Roskam and Ben Klenke tallied two apiece.
Next Up
Oregon State concludes its nearly two-week trip to Arizona Sunday when taking on Ohio State at Surprise Stadium. First pitch is slated for 8 a.m. PT (9 a.m. in Arizona).
Larnach Deep Again
Trevor Larnach entered the 2018 season with three home runs, belting all of them as a sophomore in 2017. His home run Saturday marked his fourth of the year in just seven games. He now has seven long balls for his career.
And It Finally Happened
Larnach's home run in the first Saturday marked the first of the season for the Beavers to come with an out. The previous six all came with no outs on the scoreboard.
Impressive Company
Bryce Fehmel's win Saturday marked his second of the season and 18th of his career. The junior is 18-4, a .818 winning percentage that now ranks him fifth in the Oregon State record books. He surpassed Matt Boyd, who was 22-5 (.815) from 2010-13.
Start Of The Season Watch
The win pushed Oregon State to 7-0 on the year, the best start to a season for the Beavers since the 2013 club won the first 15 games of their campaign.
Double Digits
Oregon State has now tallied at least 10 hits in five of the team's seven games this season. The lowest total for the Beavers this season is nine twice, against Gonzaga and Ohio State.
