February 25, 2018 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Grant Gambrell struck out a career-best 12 and Trevor Larnach finished with three hits and two runs batted in to send the second-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 6-1 win over Ohio State Sunday at Surprise Stadium.
The win capped an 8-0 trip to Arizona for the Beavers, who return to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field Friday night versus Hartford to open a four-game series versus the Hawks. First pitch is slated for 5:35 p.m. PT.
Gambrell made his second start of the season and struck out 12 over a career-long seven innings. The sophomore scattered five hits – all singles – and did not issue a walk before giving way to reliever Jordan Britton.
Gambrell got the win – his first of the year and second of his career.
Larnach singled twice and doubled once. He drove in a run in the first on a single, then put Oregon State up 6-0 with a run-scoring double in the fourth.
Steven Kwan drove home runs two and three for the Beavers via a single in the team's four-run second inning. Cadyn Grenier, who finished with two hits on the day, snuck a double past the bag at third to drive in the last two runs of the frame.
Ohio State (5-3) starter Yianni Pavlopoulos, who beat the Beavers in 2017, wasn't able to keep the Oregon State bats in check on Sunday. He exited after four innings, allowing six runs and eight hits. He took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year.
