Beavers Go to Five with No. 22 Bruins
November 02, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team took the first two sets from No. 22 UCLA before falling short Friday night in front of a crowd of 1,489 at Gill Coliseum.
Maddie Goings and Amy Underdown registered 21 kills each to lead the Beavers' offense and Grace Massey tallied 27 digs to lead five OSU players with 15 or more digs.
With the loss, the Beavers fall to 11-14 and 1-12 in Pac-12 play, while the Bruins improve to 12-8, 7-6. Set scores were 28-26, 26-24, 18-25, 24-26 and 9-15.
"To me it's about making the big plays and we didn't do it and UCLA did," head coach Mark Barnard. "We had our chance in the fourth set serving for the match and didn't get it done."
After exchanging sideouts early, the Beavers turned it on with an 8-1 burst fueled by a pair of kills by Amy Underdown and a pair of aces from Grace Massey and Kayla Ellis to establish a 13-6 lead. Three more put the Beavers up 16-7. UCLA wasn't going to quit though using a 6-1 run to close the game to 17-13. The Bruins continued to creep back into the match tying the score at 22-22. UCLA served for the set but OSU was able to fend off three set points before finally scoring the final three points on an Underdown kill, a Maddy Gravley kill and a block by Gravley and Daniela Vargas to secure the set, 28-26.
The second set was much like the first with the script flipped. UCLA roared out to a 9-3 lead until OSU responded with five straight including a pair of kills sandwiched around a solo block, all by Lindsey Schell, to make it 9-8. The Bruins opened the lead back to 21-15. Oregon State once again rallied with five out of six points as Underdown turned in two more kills and Massey added her second ace of the match to make 22-20. UCLA once again served for the set at 24-22, but the Beavers weren't done as Maddie Goings earned kills on the final four plays including putting away back-to-back overpasses from the Bruins.
UCLA opened the third set much like the second, returning from the break fired up. The Bruins promptly took a 9-2 lead. Kills by Vargas, Underdown, Gravley and Goings brought the Beavers back to within two points at 11-9 and the score remained close. Leading 17-16, UCLA went on a 6-0 run and eventually won the set 25-18.
The fourth set was closely fought with several momentum swings. UCLA went up 5-2, but the Beavers closed the gap to 11-10 Goings and Underdown, each of whom finished with 21 kills, continued to add to their totals. With the score tied at 15-15, UCLA began to pull away to 21-16. But, again, the Beavers responded with four straight points to make it 21-20. OSU used back-to-back kills by Underdown and another Vargas putaway to take the lead at 24-23. Despite serving for the match, the Beavers could finish the Bruins and lost the last three points to drop the set, 26-24.
The deciding set was tied at 6-6 until the Bruins used a 4-0 run to pull away. Goings added two more kills and Schell one, but it wasn't enough as UCLA secured the set, 15-9, and the match.
"We did a poor job of passing and that really limited our setters' options. UCLA was really able to key their block on our outside hitters and that makes it tough to win."
Game Notes: Amy Underdown recorded 21 kills, the most in her OSU career … Underdown, Maddie Goings and Maddie Sheehan each recorded double-doubles in the match.
