Volleyball Comes Up Short Against No. 15 USC
November 04, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to No. 15 USC Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
With the loss, the Beavers' record drops to 11-15, 1-13 in the Pac-12, while the Trojans improve to 18-7, 10-4. Set scores were 25-20, 26-24 and 25-23.
"We had such a good opportunity today with USC playing short-handed," head coach Mark Barnard said. "You just don't get many opportunities in this league and we had them today and on Friday. We played okay today but just weren't good enough. We made too many errors at the end of sets."
Junior Amy Underdown registered 15 kills to lead the Beavers' offense for the sixth straight match. Sophomore Maddie Goings recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs and added a pair of service aces. Kayla Ellis tallied a team-leading 16 digs and Grace Massey added 13.
Oregon State stayed close with the 15th-ranked Trojans early in the opening set keeping the score tied at 7-7 as Maddy Gravley got off to a fast start with three kills. USC opened a lead at 11-8, but OSU came roaring back with five straight points including a pair of Underdown kills and an ace by Goings to seize the lead at 13-11. The Trojans used a timeout to collect themselves and proceeded to go on a 12-2 run to make it 23-15. OSU fought back with four consecutive points including two kills by Goings but it wasn't enough and USC took the first set, 25-20.
The Beavers gained an early lead in Set 2 with Underdown recording two kills and Daniela Vargas notching her first of the match to go up 5-2. Shortly after, USC used a 6-1 spurt to gain the lead at 15-11. After trading sideouts, the Beavers rallied with five out of six points to tie the score at 22-22 with Underdown and Goings leading the charge. Another kill by Goings gave the Beavers the lead at 24-23 with Gravley serving for the set. The Trojans, however, had the answer and rolled off the final three points to secure the second set, 26-24.
Trailing two sets to none, the Beavers started Set 3 slowly before using a 5-0 run to establish the lead at 8-6 as Lindsey Schell recorded a kill and Maddie Sheehan added an ace. USC responded with five in a row before OSU answered back with a 5-1 run to make it 13-12. The team stayed close the rest of the way with ties at 21 and 22, before USC finished the set and match 25-23.
Game Notes: Amy Underdown led the Beavers with 15 kills … Maddie Goings recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs and added a pair of aces … Kayla Ellis led three OSU defenders with 16 digs … Lindsey Schell led the team with four blocks, all in the third set.
Next Up: Oregon State goes on the road next week to the Bay Area where it will face California on Thursday, Nov. 8, and Stanford on Friday, Nov. 9.
