Thompson, Beavers Shut Down Kansas State
February 26, 2016 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Jake Thompson tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings in his second start of the season, and the Oregon State offense erupted for 12 runs in the final four innings en route to a 14-0 victory over Kansas State Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
Thompson limited the Wildcats to five hits and two walks while striking out seven. The right-hander was relieved by Jordan Britton in the seventh and received a standing ovation from a majority of the 2,643 in attendance at the Spring Training park.
Thompson, who tossed 91 pitches – 61 for strikes – earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the year.
The Oregon State (5-1 overall) offense sparkled, finishing in double-figure hits for the fifth time in six games this season. KJ Harrison, Cadyn Grenier and Kyle Nobach all had three hits to pace the 17-hit attack. Grenier doubled and drove in four while Harrison doubled, tripled and drove in two.
Trever Morrison and Nick Madrigal both had two RBI as well as the Beavers extended their Pac-12 Conference leading run total to 55. OSU also improved its conference-leading batting average to .361.
The game-winning RBI came off the bat of Christian Donahue, whose squeeze in the second put the Beavers on the board. Harrison made it 2-0 with a single later that inning.
Oregon State was stymied the next couple innings, but put four more runs on the board in the fifth. Morrison drove a double down the left field line to drive in two, and Caleb Hamilton singled home a run to make it 6-0.
A five-run seventh gave the Beavers breathing room, and Harrison, Grenier and Madrigal drove in a run apiece in a three-run eighth to finish off the day offensively.
Parker Rigler started and took the loss for Kansas State (2-4), dropping to 0-2 on the year. The lefty allowed two hits and two runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Britton finished off the game for the Beavers, recording 2 1/3 innings of work. The lefty allowed one hit and two walks with one strikeout.
Oregon State continues action Saturday against Kansas. First pitch from Surprise Stadium is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT (1 p.m. in Arizona). Note, for fans in the Portland area, the game will air on KEX 1190 AM due to a conflict with the Portland Trail Blazers.
