BERKELEY, Calif. – Oregon State freshman forward Tres Tinkle (pictured) scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Beavers in an 83-71 setback at California on Saturday.
The Beavers (15-9, 6-7 Pac-12) trailed by 15 in the second half but mounted a rally and drew withIN 59-56 at one point. The comeback was fueled by an 11-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from freshman guard Derrick Bruce, who established career highs with three 3-point baskets and 11 points.
They were still within 67-61 with 5:07 remaining, but could not maintain that momentum and Cal pulled away late for its 16th consecutive victory at Hass Pavilion this season.
Cal thus earned a sweep of the Oregon schools and a split on the season series. The Beavers, who had won three games in a row coming into Saturday's contest, defeated the Bears 77-71 at Gill Coliseum back on Jan. 9.
Tinkle's 22 points were one short of his career high of 23, set against Quinnipiac on Dec. 21, 2015. He finished his first trip to the Bay Area with 41 points and 14 rebounds, as he had 19 points and nine boards in a victory at Stanford on Thursday night.
Cal built an early double-digit lead and led 41-29 at the half. A 3-pointer by nJordan Mathews just before the buzzer restored the double-digit cushion.
Freshman guard Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 10 points, as did senior guard Gary Payton II, who added five rebounds, four steals, two assists and a blocked shot, complemented by two nearly-identical one-handed dunks in the first half.
Jabari Bird had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead four Cal (17-8, 7-5) players in double figures. Tyrone Wallace had 17 points, Jaylen Brown 15 and Mathews had 14.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 action against Oregon at 7 p.m. ON Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks, and is part of the Civil War Series, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
