EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon State was victim to early foul trouble and hot shooting by the No. 16 Oregon Ducks as it fell 91-81 Saturday night in front of 12,364 fans at Matthew Knight Arena in the 346th edition of the Civil War.
The Civil War Rivalry Series is presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
The Beavers (15-10, 6-8 Pac-12) were led in scoring by the career-high matching 23 points by freshman Tres Tinkle. Freshman Stephen Thompson Jr. added 12 points and senior Gary Payton II had 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Tinkle has led OSU in scoring in every conference road game of the season and following Saturday's stat line became the sixth-highest scoring freshman in school history with 324 career points.
Oregon (21-6, 10-4) was led in scoring by Tyler Dorsey with 25 points.
Foul issues in the first half severely limited OSU's effectiveness on both ends of the court. Payton II picked up his second foul at the 15:32 mark and his fellow backcourt starting mate Malcolm Duvivier was whistled for his second at 12:48.
Oregon was in the bonus long before the first 10 minutes expired, and OSU head coach Wayne Tinkle was left with little options but to have Payton II return at the 9:37 mark trailing 26-14.
The Ducks built a 51-28 halftime advantage and had as much as a 25-point lead, but the Beavers outscored Oregon 53-40 in the second frame for the final margin.
Oregon State returns to Gill Coliseum for a crucial two-game homestand finale of the 2015-16 season, beginning Wednesday against the Washington Huskies at 8 p.m. To be a part of the experience, go to beavertickets.com to join Beaver Nation at the “best college town in the Pac-12.”
