Beavers Notch Pac-12 Road Win

STANFORD, Calif. -- Tres Tinkle had 19 points and nine rebounds and Gary Payton II added 14 points to lead Oregon State to a 62-50 win over Stanford on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Beavers (15-8, 6-6 Pac-12) never trailed in the game and held the Cardinal to an opponent season-low 50 points to snap a 10-game Pac-12 road losing streak. It was Oregon State's third straight win after sweeping the Mountain schools at home last week.
“We challenged our guys to turn it around,” Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. “We've struggled on the road ... I said we can start tonight -- this would be a great time to do that (turn it around) and start not a revolution, but maybe the evolution of our team on the road. We were just relaxed; guys were in a good frame of mind. We got good looks early, and we knocked 'em down.
“I was really proud of our defensive effort in the second half. We gave them 52 percent (FG shooting) in the first half; that's not Beaver defense. It wasn't pretty -- we squandered some opportunities in the second half. Their zone -- we let it frustrate us. We won a game with our backs against the wall on the defensive end, and on the glass, which is where we've been beat up.”
Malcolm Duvivier hit three 3-pointers in the first half and finished a spectacular all-around game with 11 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Tinkle went 7-for-13 from the field, including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, and scored six points in the final 1:02 for his game-high 19 points. He was just one rebound shy of his second double-double of the season.
Payton II filled up the stat sheet like usual, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Rosco Allen scored 12 points to lead Stanford (11-11, 4-7), which lost its fourth straight.
It was just the second win by Oregon State at Stanford since 1993. The Beavers had lost 20 of their previous 21 games at Maples Pavilion, winning only in 2009. The victory was the first for the Beavers in a conference road game since Jan. 17, 2015, snapping a streak of 10 straight road losses in Pac-12 play.
Oregon State opened the second half with an 11-4 run to build an 11-point lead, and a 3-pointer by Payton with 8 1/2 minutes remaining made it 47-35. The Cardinal made a late run, scoring six straight points to pull within 51-46 with three minutes left, but Payton responded with a layup and Stanford never got closer than five points the rest of the game.
The Beavers led 33-29 at halftime after shooting better from beyond the 3-point line (6 of 12) than from inside the arc (6 of 14) in the first half. Duvivier had three of those 3-pointers and Tinkle had two.
Oregon State returns to action against California at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 Oregon.
