CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore center Drew Eubanks had 17 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and six blocked shots on Wednesday but the Oregon State men's basketball team fell 63-60 to Lamar at Gill Coliseum.
Freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin added 15 points, three 3-point baskets and three assists in his first career start. However, the Beavers (2-1) were undone by 27 turnovers that resulted in them attempting only 47 shots, 24 fewer than the Cardinals (2-0).
The Beavers trailed at halftime for the second game in a row but they used a 12-0 run early in the second half to tie the game at 41-41 with 9:54 remaining on a layup by McLaughlin. Lamar responded with a 7-1 run of its own to take a 48-42 lead with 6:59 to play and the Beavers could never draw even.
OSU closed within 55-54 with 24 seconds to play following two free throws by sophomore forward Tres Tinkle. It fouled immediately and Lamar's Joey Frenchwood made two of his own with 23 seconds left to restore a 3-point lead (58-55). The Beavers could get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Another McLaughlin layup got the Beavers within 62-60 with three seconds to play. Lamar's Torey Noel was fouled with 1.5 seconds left and missed the second shot of the double bonus but Tinkle's desperation 80-foot shot at the buzzer did not draw iron.
Lamar led for the final 13:48 of the first half and held a 29-25 intermission advantage. The Beavers had more turnovers (18) than shots (17) in the first half and Lamar capitalized on OSU's sloppy ball-handling by outscoring OSU 21-2 following turnovers.
Lamar finished with 30 points off turnovers to OSU's six. OSU had a 32-20 edge in points in the paint as Eubanks dominated inside. His previous high for rebounds was 13, against Washington on Feb. 24, 2016.
Tinkle, the reigning Pacific-12 Conference Player of the Week, had nine points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Matt Dahlen added a career-best six rebounds in only eight minutes of playing time.
OSU played its second straight game without sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr., its second-leading returning scorer from 2015-16. He is out with a minor foot injury.
The Beavers play their first road game of the season on Friday when they visit Nevada for a 7 p.m. matchup at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno. It's the first of a two-game road trip that concludes with a Tuesday game at Tulsa. OSU defeated both opponents in 2015-16.
