Bergstrom Nets First Goal in Victory Over Huskies
October 30, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE — Oregon State's redshirt-sophomore Emma Bergstrom scored her first goal of her career, to help the Beavers defeat Washington, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The victory is the first Pac-12 road win for OSU since the 2013 season and the first at Husky Soccer Stadium since 2010.
Â
"Tremendous and gritty team performance today," said head coach Linus Rhode. "We've been close in so many conference games, so it was great to get another win."
Oregon State (7-10-2, 2-8 Pac-12) tallied five shots in the match, paced by junior Kayla Latham and Bergstrom, each fired a shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Bella Geist was solid between the pipes, recording her third shutout of the season, while tallying seven saves after seeing 17 Huskies shots.
Â
Washington (7-11-1, 2-8 Pac-12) took eight shots in the first half, with only three being on mark as the match was scoreless after the first 45 minutes.
Â
The Huskies started the first 15 minutes of the second half taking three shots, including a pair that were saved by Geist. The Beavers took to the offense in the 60th minute as freshman Taylor Lemmond was fouled by the Husky goalkeeper to set up a free kick just outside the 18. Bergstrom took the kick and sent a rocket into the left side of the goal to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Washington looked to find the equalizer down the stretch shooting six shots, but failing to hit the mark.
Â
Oregon State will close its season on Friday at Oregon with the Civil War match starting at 3 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
