Beavers Sweep Stanford
May 17, 2015 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Gabe Clark homered, KJ Harrison drove in two and Joe Gillette had three hits as No. 19 Oregon State defeated Stanford, 12-3, Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.
The win gave the Beavers a sweep of the Cardinal and pushed Oregon State's record to 36-14-1 overall and 17-9-1 in Pac-12 Conference play. The sweep is the Beavers' third straight over the Cardinal.
OSU opened the game's scoring with Clark's eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot that easily cleared the fence in left, in the second inning. It came on the heels of Joe Gillette's first single of the afternoon.
The Cardinal pulled to within one with a solo run in the third, but the Beavers scored three in the fifth. OSU scored its first run of the inning when Dane Lund reached on a bunt single and an errant throw enabled Christian Donahue to score. Two batters later, Harrison drove in two with a double off the base of the wall in left.
OSU saw its lead trimmed to two runs in the sixth, but went back up by four with a two-run seventh. Lund scored when Elliott Cary struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. Kyle Nobach, the next batter, singled to right, driving in Harrison from third.
The Beavers used a four-run eighth inning to hit double digits for the first time in Pac-12 action.
Gillette singled three times to lead the Beavers offensively, while
Travis Eckert started for the Beavers and threw 5 1/3 innings, where he allowed seven hits and three runs. Eckert tallied the win to improve to 6-0 on the year.
Eckert gave up two of his three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, a frame that saw the Cardinal tally its runs on one hit and four walks. The Beavers used four pitchers in the inning, with Scotland Church getting out of a bases-loaded jam on a popup to short.
Chris Castellanos started for Stanford and worked five full innings, allowing eight hits and five runs. The lefty was charged with the loss and dropped to 2-3 on the year.
The win was Oregon State's 11th straight over Stanford. It also marked the Beavers' 10th straight at Sunken Diamond dating back to the 2009 season.
Oregon State returns home next week and opens with Oregon Tuesday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Civil War presented by PacificSource Health Plans, The Oregon 529 College Savings Network, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores, will start at 7:05 p.m. PT in a game televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
