Home Runs Pace OSU Over Spartans
March 26, 2015 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Gabe Clark and Michael Howard hit back-to-back home runs in a six-run seventh inning Wednesday night for No. 24 Oregon State to help send the Beavers to an 8-2 win over San Jose State at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Kevin Flemer spun 6 2/3 innings of two-hit baseball in the longest outing of his career, allowing one run with five strikeouts. While he didn't get the win, he helped send the Beavers to their fifth consecutive victory as they prepare to face Big West Conference foe Cal Poly this weekend.
Down 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, OSU (20-5 overall) unleashed a six-run seventh inning with five runs being charged to San Jose State reliever Ross Slaney, who eventually took the loss to fall to 1-2.
Jeff Hendrix tied the game with a run-scoring single. Trever Morrison then put OSU up for good with another run-scoring single. Both scored when Clark unleashed a three-run home run over the left field fence three batters later. Howard then hit a solo shot to make it 7-2 in favor of Oregon State.
KJ Harrison added a sacrifice fly in the eighth for his second run batted in of the night for the 8-2 final.
Flemer, in the first start of his career, held San Jose State (7-18) off the board until Shane Timmons hit a run-scoring single in the fourth inning. That was the only blemish on Flemer's outing as he exited with a 1-1 tie in the seventh after throwing 83 pitches.
The Spartans' Chris Williams hit a solo home run off reliever Ryan Mets to give SJSU a short 2-1 advantage.
John Pomeroy, who came on in relief of Mets, worked 1 1/3 innings for his second win of the season.
The Beavers rapped out 10 hits off six San Jose State pitchers, with Clark and Kyle Nobach leading the team with two apiece.
The Beavers now turn their attention to Cal Poly, whom Oregon State hosts Friday (5:35 p.m.), Saturday (1:35 p.m.) and Sunday (1:05). Tickets can be purchased at beavertickets.com. Have tickets but can't make it to the game? Visit StubHub.com.
