King's Single Wins Seesaw Battle
February 20, 2015 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Billy King's two-out pinch hit single in the bottom of the ninth sent the Oregon State baseball team to a 10-9 win over Kansas State Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
King, pinch hitting for Kyle Nobach, laced an 0-1 pitch from reliever Kyle Halbohn in left field, enabling Christian Donahue to come in from third with the game-winning run. Donahue was pinch running for Gabe Clark, who opened the inning with a single. Donahue moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Ice and to third on a groundout by Caleb Hamilton.
The win was Oregon State's (4-2 overall) third in the Beavers' final at bat this season. OSU won on a “balk off” against Northwestern to open the season, and defeated Michigan State, 4-3, on a single by Nobach in the 10th inning the following day.
On Friday, it was King's single that ended what amounted to a seesaw battle. The Beavers jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the strength of six-run second inning that was punctuated by KJ Harrison's third home run of the season.
That lead, however, did not last as Kansas State (3-3) answered with two in the third and five runs in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. A Jeff Hendrix triple and sac fly by Scotland Church in the sixth pushed the Beavers to an 8-7 advantage that was made 9-7 when Ice singled home a run in the seventh.
The Wildcats, however, scored two off OSU reliever Mitch Hickey in the ninth, leading to King's game winner in the bottom half of the inning. Hickey, who went one inning as the Beavers' sixth pitcher of the game, improved to 2-0 on the year. Kansas State's Jordan Floyd took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season.
The Beavers tied a school record with four triples; one apiece from Hendrix, Clark, Morrison and Hamilton. O erall, Oregon State rapped out 14 hits to the Wildcats' 13.
Hendrix led the Beavers with three hits, while Harrison, Clark, Ice and Morrison all had two apiece. Hendrix, Harrison and Morrison all drove in two runs for the Beavers.
