Beavers' Comeback Bid Falls Just Short
February 21, 2015 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Trever Morrison reached base safely five times and Gabe Clark hit his first home run of the season but Oregon State wasn't able to overcome an early deficit in a 9-6 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday at Surprise Stadium.
Clark's three-run home run pulled the Beavers to within three, 9-5, in the seventh, and he added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 9-6. But Oklahoma's Sheldon Neuse came in to close the door on the Beavers with 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the save.
Morrison set a career-high with four hits, including a double, and he also walked to reach base safely in all five plate appearances. He paced an OSU offense that rapped out 12 hits off four Oklahoma pitchers.
Caleb Hamilton also had three hits for the Beavers, while Clark's four RBI paced OSU (4-3 overall). The Sooners (5-4), meanwhile, were led offensively by Neuse and Anthony Hermelyn, who had two hits apiece. Oklahoma ended the game with four triples, matching the Beavers' output from a night before.
OSU went up 1-0 in the first on a wild pitch, but watched as the Sooners took a 4-1 lead. KJ Harrison extended his hit streak to seven games with a third-inning double that pulled OSU to within two, 4-2.
The Sooners, however, scored the next five runs for a 9-2 lead.
Luke Heimlich started and took the loss for the Beavers. The lefty went five innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs. His counterpart, Alec Hansen, picked up the win to improve to 1-1. The Oklahoma starter, he allowed five hits and two runs in five innings but racked up 12 strikeouts.
