CORVALLIS, Ore. – Langston Morris-Walker and Gary Payton II each recorded a career-high 16 points as Oregon State downed Corban, 86-62 on Tuesday night at Gill Coliseum in front of a crowd of 3,608.
Oregon State (2-0) took advantage of a balanced offensive attack that featured five players scoring in double digits and 13 Beavers seeing the floor in the contest. As a team, they hit 57.1 percent of their shots, going 36-for-63 from the field.
"We challenged our guys after the win against Rice to see how we would handle success," Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "We haven't had success for a while, and these guys will probably tell you that we didn't pass the test. Practice the last couple days and a shootaround wasn't good and carried over to the game. It's a great lesson, and it's really good to learn lessons when you win. This was a good lesson for us and we'll get better from it.”
Payton II was a spark plug for the Beavers on both ends of the ball, hitting 7-of-12 shots, grabbing nine boards and dishing out four assists. Morris-Walker also filled up the stat sheet, knocking down 6-of-13 from the floor, and adding five rebounds and two assists on the night.
Both Olaf Schaftenaar and Victor Robbins contributed 11 points to the Oregon State effort, finding open looks and firing to the hoop.
Oregon State did not surrender the lead in the game, behind a dominant performance inside, outscoring Corban (3-1) 52-12 in the painted area.
The Beavers also outrebounded the Warriors 37-24, showing their physicality and hustle on the boards.
Jordan Carter led Corban with 18 points, going 4-for-10 from the field. He added five rebounds and two assists to his final line. Cody Crowe also played well for the Warriors, recording nine points and six rebounds.
For the second consecutive game, Malcolm Duvivier came out firing, drilling a three-ball just 30 seconds into the first frame. The Beavers would push out to a 27-16 lead halfway through the stanza after Reid burned past his defender and got a layup to fall.
Daniel Gomis made his season debut late in the opening stanza, and his presence was immediately felt on both ends for the Beavers. He finished the night with four points and four rebounds in nine minutes.
Walk-ons Matt Dahlen and Tanner Sanders made contributions on the scoreboard in the first, with Dahlen dropping in a layup and Sanders splashing a three from atop the arc. It was the first basket for each of them in a Beaver uniform.
At the end of the first period, Morris-Walker drew contact at the rim and was sent to the line for two, making both and propping Oregon State to a 48-29 lead going into halftime.
The second half followed much of the same rhythm as the first, as Oregon State kept its momentum rolling, extending the advantage to 57-33, with just over 15 minutes left to play in the game.
The Beavers would keep their foot on the gas for the remainder of the contest, keeping the Warriors at bay and securing the second win of the season.
Up next, the Beavers will host Oral Roberts at Gill Coliseum on Friday at 6 p.m. in a game televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
