CORVALLIS, Ore. - Devon Collier had a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and Ahmad Starks scored 18 points and moved into fourth all-time at Oregon State in three-point field goals, but the Beavers dropped a hard-fought 80-70 loss to No. 4 Arizona Saturday at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (10-6, 0-3 Pac-12) were playing without Victor Robbins, who are suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, for the second straight game and the lack of depth took its toll as Arizona pulled away in the second half.
"Ahmad kept us in the game in the first half," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "He might have gotten a little tired in the second half because he played a lot of minutes with (Challe) Barton in foul trouble."
Oregon State played with a lot of energy in the first half and trailed only 34-33 with 3:29 before intermission. Arizona (15-1, 3-1) ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 43-35 lead and opened the second frame on a 6-0 spurt to build a 12-point lead. The Wildcats never trailed by less than 11 until Joe Burton made a layup for the final points of the game.
Collier battled inside against a much taller Arizona frontline and tallied his second double-double of the season and fifth of his career.
"I'm more pleased with Devon's defense more than his offense tonight," Robinson said. "I'm really happy how he played; he brought a lot of energy. All things considered, being shorthanded, Devon had a really good week."
Two other Beavers hit double figures as Roberto Nelson and Burton each finished with 15 points. Burton added eight rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Starks hit three three-pointers in the game and now has 163 in his career, trailing only Gary Payton (178), Deaundra Tanner (179) and Chris Stephens (180) in Oregon State history. He also moved into fourth in career three-pointers attempted with 441.
Four Arizona players scored in double figures led by Solomon Hill and Mark Lyons who each had 16 points.
