LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Roberto Nelson had a team-high 17 points and Olaf Schaftenaar set career highs with 10 points and four rebounds, but Oregon State fell to 24th-ranked and red-hot UCLA, 74-64, at New Pauley Pavilion on Thursday night in Los Angeles, Calif.
UCLA (15-3, 5-0 Pac-12) jumped out to a 20-point second-half lead and held on to post its 10th straight win against an Oregon State team that kept fighting until the final horn. The Beavers (10-7, 0-4) were playing without Victor Robbins, who missed their third straight game for being suspended due to a violation of team rules, but are eligible to play on Saturday against USC.
"I saw some good things in there, but there were too many bad things," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "I was happy with the way the second team played D. I think the start of that second half put us behind. I thought we had some momentum going into the halftime. That kind of took the wind out of the sails. Then I put the second group in and they played evenly and kind of helped us get our footing. So that's the positive from it.
"We are missing three big bodies - Daniel Gomis, Angus Brandt and Eric Moreland - but no excuses. Even with the guys we have left, we are capable of playing well. I was extremely happy with the effort. The effort was good. It's the execution that we've got to be better at."
Oregon State got off to a quick start to take a 14-9 lead on a layup by Burton at the 15:03 mark. UCLA responded with a 10-0 run to take a 19-14 lead before the Beavers cut it to 21-19 on a three-pointer by Nelson. But the Bruins got their offense in gear and ended the half on a 16-7 spurt to lead 37-26 at intermission.
UCLA opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 48-28. Burton stopped the run with a layup, and after a jumper by Travis Wear, Schaftenaar made a three-pointer to cut it to 50-33.
Trailing 58-40, the Beavers made one last push when they went on an 8-0 run to make it 58-48. But they were unable to get the game in single digits as the Bruins managed the clock down the stretch.
Nelson went 7-for-14 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, to finish with 17 points. Schaftenaar knocked down three triples and added a free throw to post a career-high 10 points, while Joe Burton was the other Oregon State player in double figures with 12 points. Burton also had eight rebounds to just miss his seventh career double-double.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday against USC in a 5 p.m. game at the Galen Center that will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
