TEMPE, Ariz. - For the second consecutive game, the 20th-ranked Oregon State baseball allowed No. 24 Arizona State to capitalize in two-out situations and lost to the Sun Devils, 3-2, Friday night at Packard Stadium.
Arizona State scored three runs in the fifth, all with two outs, to claim the series victory. It came on the heels of Thursday night's 8-2 loss in which Arizona State scored seven runs with two outs.
The Beavers nearly rallied from a three-run deficit in the eighth.
The Beavers got on the board in the eighth when Michael Conforto sharply singled up the middle bringing in Ryan Gorton and John Tommasini, the latter of whom narrowly beat the throw from center. Conforto, the tying run, was stranded at first on a fly out to left to end the inning.
Deven Marrero provided the Sun Devils (18-12 overall, 5-6 Pac-12 Conference) with the lead in the fifth with a triple down the right field line. It scored Michael Benjamin and Andrew Aplin.
The Sun Devils added their third run of the inning when Joey DeMichele, the next batter, singled through the right side, scoring Marrero.
Oregon State (18-10, 6-5) starter Ben Wetzler threw 109 pitches in 5 1/3 innings of work and took the loss to drop to 4-1 this season. He allowed five hits and three runs while walking four and striking out five.
His counterpart, Trevor Williams, earned the win to improve to 6-2 this season. He worked seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
Jake Barrett worked a scoreless ninth for ASU to earn his fifth save.
