Oregon State 78, Montana State 65
November 25, 2012
Gill Coliseum
Corvallis, Ore.
Oregon State is 4-1 to start the season for the second consecutive year. The last time the Beavers won four of their first five games in back-to-back seasons was 1999-2000.
The Beavers are now 3-1 when wearing the turquoise Nike N7 uniforms. They went 2-0 last season in the turquoise after dropping the inaugural Nike N7 game two years ago.
Oregon State tied a team record with 11 blocked shots in the game. The Beavers also had 11 blocks in the quadruple-overtime loss to Stanford on Jan. 7, 2012.
The Beavers had 51 rebounds in the game, the second time they've pulled down 50+ boards in a game this season. They only had one game last season when grabbing 50 or more rebounds.
Angus Brandt missed his first game since Dec. 1, 2010 (a 70-68 loss to Utah Valley at Gill Coliseum) to snap a streak of 65 consecutive games played.
Freshman Jarmal Reid replaced Brandt in the starting lineup for his first career start.
Senior Joe Burton had a career high 21 points to better his previous career best of 18 points he scored in two previous games (most recently vs. Stanford on Jan. 7, 2012).
Burton posted his fifth career double-double, and first this season, with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Four different Oregon State players (Burton, Brandt, Collier and Moreland) have a double-double this season.
Sophomore Eric Moreland also had his fifth career double-double, and second on the season, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The last time Oregon State had two players with a double-double in a game was March 8, 2012 when the Beavers upset No. 1-seed Washington in the Pac-12 Tournament. Jared Cunningham had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Burton added 14 points and 10 boards in that game.
Junior Ahmad Starks had a career high with nine rebounds. He previous career best was seven boards in three different games, most recently against Niagara in the season opener on Nov. 9, 2012.
With two three-pointers, Starks moved into a tie for seventh with Lathen Wallace on Oregon State's career list with 133 triples. He passed Calvin Haynes who made 132 in his career.
Junior Devon Collier tied his career high with four blocked shots. He now has four blocks in three different games.
Freshman Olaf Schaftenaar recorded his first career points as a Beaver, coming on a three-pointer in first half, and finished with nine points in the game.
Schaftenaar had a career high in every possible statistical category.
