2K SPORTS CLASSIC benefiting WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT
November 15, 2012
Madison Square Garden
New York, N.Y.
Head coach Craig Robinson
Opening Comment...
"It's really nice to be a part of this tournament; 2K Sports Classic that's benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. It's something that's near and dear to our family's heart. I know my guys have a new understanding of what these warriors have sacrificed for this country and for our freedoms. It's just nice to be a part of it, win or lose, it's nice to be a part of this and get to know some of the captains, just a really nice event to be a part of."
On the game...
"I couldn't be more proud of this team. To come back from a tough loss like we had yesterday and to fight it out in a very physical game, very rough game, to be able to weather the storm that a good Purdue team put on us there in the second half. And to hold on to our guts and make plays down the stretch, we want and have changed the culture of the program. And these guys sitting next to me [Devon Collier and Roberto Nelson] have bought in and they've done a really good job."
On his team's rebounding advantage...
"I'd be lying to you if we didn't make a big deal about it because from my days at Northwestern as an assistant and watching the games coming forward and seeing the game last night, we knew they were going to crash the boards. That's sort of their M.O. Matt Painter played like that when he was a player and he coaches his teams like that, so we knew they were going to crash the boards. And not only did we know that, this year rebounding is a point of emphasis for us. We've always been outrebounded, and we have a frontcourt that takes rebounding very seriously, very personally, and they took this as a challenge."
On playing in his hometown...
"This means a lot, especially coming from a bad loss yesterday. Coach (Robinson) got us ready, told us to brush the game off, to come up with a new mentality and just make up for the mistakes that we made yesterday. And that's what we did."
On outrebounding Purdue 47-36...
"It was just being tough. Coach told us they were going to be tough, and to be physical. And that's what we did. They're a very aggressive team and we weren't going to let them push us around, so we responded well and played physical with them."
