Volleyball Loses to Gonzaga in Five; Eneliko Named All-Tournament
August 27, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
Laramie, Wyo. – Senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) earned her second double-double of the season with a team-high 15 kills and 13 digs, but the Oregon State volleyball team (2-2) lost in five (25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 13-15) to the Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-1) on Saturday evening to wrap play in the UniWyo Wyoming Invite.
“Tayla [Woods] did a good job coming in for Megan and really gave our hitters a chance to put the ball down on good sets, so I'm really proud of her for that,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We let that one get away. You've got to finish off the match when you're leading 10-4 in the fifth and have them reeling. We just made some unforced errors but our outside hitters got tentative, and we can't be tentative; we're too good for that. We've got to keep working on terminating a ball and blocking by our outsides.”
Redshirt freshman Tayla Woods (Corvallis, Ore.) played the last two sets for the Beavers at setter, counting 19 assists, while adding two kills and an ace.
Gonzaga jumped out to a slim early lead, but Oregon State quickly tied things up before taking the lead and never looking back in the first set. Shaw led Oregon State hitting errorless with five kills, while the team played solid all-around defense. Junior Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) finished off the set with an ace to give Oregon State the early advantage.
The Bulldogs came back to take sets two and three, but the Beavers rallied to tie things up at two sets each to force a deciding fifth set behind Shaw, junior Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman Arica Nassar's (Menifee, Calif.) four kills each with Shaw earning her second double-double of the weekend.
Oregon State went up to as many as six over Gonzaga at 10-4 in the fifth, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie the set at 13, scoring the final two to take the win.
Defensively, sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) paced the backcourt with 17 digs, while junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) contributed 14. And Nassar earned a best seven blocks, two solo, to lead all blockers in the match.
Junior Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) was named to the UniWyo Wyoming Invite All-Tournament Team.
Gonzaga's Laura Day posted a match-high 16 kills, adding 15 digs.
Oregon State faces Cal State Bakersfield next in the Active Ankle Challenge at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4 in legendary Gill Coliseum.
