TUCSON, Ariz. - Carter Bell went 3-for-4 and the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team utilized a five-run second inning to dispatch No. 18 Arizona, 8-4, Sunday afternoon in the three-game series finale at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium.
Bell singled three times for his seventh multi-hit game of the 2011 season, pacing the Beavers, who tallied 14 hits off five Arizona pitchers.
Oregon State's first five batters in the lineup - consisting of Michael Miller, Ryan Barnes, Danny Hayes, Andrew Susac and Jared Norris - combined to go 9-for-20 with three doubles, four walks and six runs batted in.
Miller, Barnes, Susac and Norris all had two hits apiece to backup Bell's effort as the Beavers took the three-game series from the Wildcats, 2-1.
"This was a great way to finish the weekend," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We had a balanced effort, offensively and defensively, and got a great effort from Ben (Wetzler), Matt (Boyd) and Tony (Bryant) on the mound. I'm very proud of the way this team rebounded with two victories after Friday night's loss."
Oregon State (20-7 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference) got to Arizona starter Tyler Hale early and often, posting 10 hits and seven runs off the righty in 2 2/3 innings. He dropped to 3-2 this season.
The Beavers scored one on a groundout by Danny Hayes in top half of the first, but Arizona (20-9, 2-4) answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Oregon State, however, didn't waste time in the second. The Beavers broke the game open with a five-run inning.
Barnes drove a two-out pitch to left center for two RBI to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead. He scored on a double to center by Hayes, who then scored himself when Andrew Susac doubled to left center for a 5-1 advantage.
Norris topped off the inning's scoring with a single, driving in Susac from second.
Wetzler spun his third quality start of the season, lasting six innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-1 this season. He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out one. He did not issue a walk.
Wetzler was touched by a two-run home run off the bat of Robert Refsnyder in the sixth, which marked just the fourth long ball given up by the Beavers this season. Wetzler promptly forced designated hitter Josh Garcia to foul out to Norris at first, ending the Arizona rally and Wetzler's day. Boyd came in at the start of the seventh.
Boyd worked two innings before giving way to Bryant in the ninth, who closed out the game in a non-save situation.
Oregon State steps out of league play Tuesday when the Beavers head to Portland non-conference tilt with the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
