PORTLAND, Ore. - Parker Berberet homered and tallied four runs driven in to pace the 19th-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 11-1 win over Portland in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
"We played well today and chalked up a good victory," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We got a great outing from James (Nygren) and we did what we needed to do for a midweek win."
Nygren made his fourth start of the season and was the recipient of the run support. He improved to 4-1 after going 7 2/3 innings Tuesday, allowing five hits and one run while striking out three. He tallied his third quality start this season in the process.
Offensively, the Beavers finished with just seven hits but drew 10 walks and were hit by a pitch three times combined by seven Portland pitchers.
Jared Norris and Kavin Keyes both tallied two hits to lead the Beavers, who improved to 21-7 this season, forcing Portland to drop to 10-15.
Berberet's four RBI led the team, giving him his eighth multiple-RBI game of the season. Norris and Danny Hayes each posted two RBI for Oregon State, which extended its win streak to three games.
The Beavers wasted little time in getting on the board, plating four runs in the first on the strength of a hit batsman (Michael Miller) and three walks. Oregon State scored its first run of the game when Berberet walked with the bases loaded, then its second when Jared Norris hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Carter Bell then reached on a throwing error, which allowed two runs to score.
Berberet made it 7-0 after two when he took a 3-2 pitch from Portland reliever Chad Kjemhus and put it over the left field fence for a three-run home run. It was Berberet's fourth home run of the season and gave him four RBI through just two innings.
Oregon State added more runs in a three-run sixth, highlighted by Hayes' two-run double, to put it at a 10-0 advantage before Portland posted a solo run in the seventh.
Brent Miller made his first start of the 2011 season and threw just 18 pitches, of only which four went for strikes. He walked three, hit a batter and allowed four runs to take the loss and drop to 3-2 this season.
The win pushed Oregon State to a 10-game win streak over Portland and marked the program's 150th all-time against the Pilots. The Beavers have a 70-26 record all-time in games played against the Pilots in Portland and have not lost at Etzel Field since 2004.
Oregon State will now set its sights on No. 5 Arizona State, which visits Corvallis and Goss Stadium for a three-game series starting Friday. First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT.
