CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sam Gaviglio continued his strong start to the season, throwing eight shutout innings as the Oregon State baseball team defeated New Mexico State, 7-0, in front of 2,054 fans at Goss Stadium Friday night.
Gaviglio extended his scoreless innings streak to 29 innings, striking out five while scattering three hits and three walks in the win over the Aggies. Gaviglio picked up win No. 3 of the season - and 16th of his career - as the Beavers stretched their win streak to a Pacific-10 Conference best eight games.
Oregon State also improved to 11-3 this season; New Mexico State dropped to 11-4.
"I think we played well," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "Sam threw well. He kept New Mexico State off balance and helped the defense play well behind him."
Oregon State took advantage of two New Mexico State errors in the second inning to post six runs to jump out to the 6-0 lead. They touched Aggies' starter Ryan Beck (2-2 on the year) for four hits in the inning.
Ryan Barnes, Luke Acosta and Kavin Keyes all posted run-scoring singles in the inning and the Beavers posted additional runs on a balk and two errors.
Michael Miller made it 7-0 in the eighth with a sharp single to right for his first RBI of the season.
Garrett Nash posted a 2-for-5 effort to lead the Beavers, who posted eight hits. Beck took the loss after allowing seven hits and six runs - two earned - over seven innings. He walked four and struck out three.
Oregon State continues its weekend by playing VMI Saturday at 4:35 p.m. PT at Goss Stadium (please note the game is moved up an hour from 5:35 p.m. due to expected inclement weather). The Keydets are now scheduled to play New Mexico State at 12 p.m.
