CORVALLIS, Ore. - Eddie House scored 24 points and Alton Mason added 18 as Arizona State kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive by defeating Oregon State 77-74 in overtime Saturday night.
Arizona State (17-11, 9-7 Pac-10) desperately needed the win after Thursday night's 76-74 loss at Oregon, in which the Sun Devils threw away an inbounds pass in the final seconds and lost on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Josh Steinthal and Jason Heide each scored 17 points to lead the Beavers (13-15, 5-12).
Deaundra Tanner, whose 3-pointer at the horn beat No. 3 Arizona 70-69 in overtime Thursday night, sent this game into the extra period with a jumper but couldn't do it one last time.
After Mason's free throws put the Sun Devils ahead 77-73 with 37 seconds left, Tanner missed a shot, but Steinthal rebounded and called timeout. Clifton Jones was fouled and missed his second shot, but the Beavers rebounded with 8.1 seconds left.
Tanner's final shot was off to the left, and House rebounded to run out the clock.
Oregon State missed six of their nine free throws in overtime and 20 of 38 overall. Jones, one of five seniors playing his last home game, went 1-for-5 in overtime.
Tanner's short jumper with 22.5 seconds left in regulation tied it at 69. Storey's jumper missed, and a putback attempt by Justin Allen was blocked by Oregon State's Clifton Jones as time ran out.
Tanner, who finished with 13 points, might have played his final game at Gill Coliseum as well. The sophomore has said he may leave school and return to the Los Angeles area to be closer to his young son.
House, leading the Pac-10 in scoring at 22.8 per game, made 9-of-18 shots.
Arizona State could make a strong case for being the fourth Pac-10 team to make the tournament behind Stanford, Arizona and Oregon. But UCLA's 94-93 overtime win over the Cardinal puts the Bruins in position to sneak in.
