Former Oregon State backstop Ryan Ortiz returned to Corvallis in 2017 and is in his second season as an undergraduate assistant coach with the Beavers.
Ortiz is back with Oregon State after spending seven seasons in the Oakland Athletics and Cleveland Indians organizations, where he played at the Triple-A level in both 2013 and 2014.
Ortiz, a native of San Pedro, Calif., lettered at Oregon State from 2007-09. With the Beavers, he played in 115 games, starting 103, where he batted .348 with 33 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 100 runs batted in. He also amassed 68 walks to 65 strikeouts.
He was an all-Pac-10 selection in both 2008 and 2009 before being selected in the sixth round of the 2009 MLB FIrst-Year Player Draft by the Athletics. Ortiz was the first OSU player taken by Oakland in nearly 30 seasons.
Ortiz came to Oregon State from San Diego’s St. Augustine High School. In 2009, he was named a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection, a year after being named honorable mention.
